iPhone vs Samsung Galaxy: How to Choose Your Next Phone
The iPhone or Galaxy question is one of the most common we hear. Both are excellent, and the right answer depends on how you use your phone, not on which is "better." Here's how to think it through.
The core difference: software and ecosystem
iPhone runs iOS. Apple designs the phone and the software together, so everything feels consistent, and it works smoothly with other Apple products like a Mac, iPad, Apple Watch or AirPods. Messaging with other iPhone users, sharing photos and syncing across devices are all built in.
Samsung Galaxy phones run Android with Samsung's own layer on top. You get more room to customize the home screen and settings, a wide choice of models at many price points, and tight links with Google services and Samsung's own watches and earbuds.
If most of your family and devices are already on one side, that's a strong reason to stay there.
Price range and choice
- Samsung sells many Galaxy models at a wide range of prices, from budget phones to premium flagships with large screens and extra features.
- iPhone has fewer models at a time, and older iPhones tend to hold their value well, which affects what you'll pay secondhand.
If you want a lower price, a wider choice of sizes and features, or a specific feature such as a stylus or a folding screen, Galaxy offers more variety. If you want a simple lineup that's easy to choose from, iPhone is simpler.
Updates and how long a phone lasts
Both brands support their phones with software updates for several years, but how long depends on the model and its age. When you buy a used or refurbished phone, ask what update support is left. A great phone that no longer gets security updates is a poor buy.
Cameras
Both brands make strong cameras, and the difference is often in style. Many people notice that photos look different from one brand to the other, with different color and contrast. The best test is to look at photos taken on each and see which you like.
Accessories
Cases, chargers and screen protectors are easy to find for both. Just remember that accessories are made for specific models, so check that a case fits your exact phone. If you need help, see our accessories page or ask us.
A simple way to decide
Ask yourself:
- Which do the people I message and share with use? Staying in the same ecosystem makes things easier.
- How much do I want to customize? If a lot, lean Android. If not, iPhone's consistency may suit you.
- What's my budget? Galaxy has more models at lower prices, while older iPhones are a popular way to get a premium phone for less.
- How long do I want it to last? Check update support for the exact model.
Consider Google Pixel too
If you like Android but want Google's own version of it, Google Pixel phones are worth a look. See our Pixel page.
