Buying an Unlocked iPhone in Philadelphia: Where to Look and What to Check
You have more options than you might think, and they differ in price, protection and effort. This guide compares the four main types of seller you'll run into, what to ask each one, and where Philly Phone Sales fits. It doesn't rank individual local shops, because inventory, prices and policies change too often.
An unlocked iPhone isn't tied to one carrier, so you can use a SIM or eSIM from the carrier you choose. If you want the basics first, read what "unlocked" means.
Your main options
1. Apple and carrier stores. These sell new phones, and Apple also sells refurbished ones. Expect the highest prices and the most protection. Check the current return and warranty terms on the seller's site, since they change.
2. Online marketplaces. Swappa, Back Market, eBay and Amazon's renewed section all sell used and refurbished iPhones. Prices are often good, but protection varies by seller and by site. Read the listing's condition grade, the seller's return policy and what the site's buyer protection actually covers.
3. Private sellers. Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist and OfferUp usually have the lowest prices and the least protection. You inspect the phone yourself, and once you've paid, you usually can't undo it. If you go this route:
- Meet in a public place.
- Bring your own SIM or be ready to test an eSIM.
- Don't pay until the phone passes every check in our used iPhone checklist.
- Walk away if the seller won't let you check something.
4. Independent sellers like us. A small seller can describe condition in plain terms, answer questions by message or phone, and check carrier compatibility for you. What you can expect varies by seller, so ask the same questions you'd ask anyone.
Questions to ask any seller
- What's the exact model and storage?
- What's the battery health percentage?
- Is it unlocked, and is it paid off?
- Has any part been replaced, and what does Parts and Service History say?
- What does the condition description mean, in words, not just a grade?
- What's the return window, and how do I send it back?
- Is there a warranty, and is it in writing?
Apple's own advice for buying a preowned iPhone covers the same ground: check the seller's return policy, ask what their inspection covers, and look into battery health and parts history (Apple Support).
What to check on the phone
The full walkthrough is in our used iPhone checklist. The short version:
- Confirm Activation Lock is off and the phone has been erased.
- Under Settings, General, About, make sure Carrier Lock says "No SIM restrictions."
- Check battery health and Parts and Service History.
- Run an IMEI check, and remember it doesn't prove the phone is paid off.
- Get the price, condition and return terms in writing.
Used, refurbished or new?
These words don't mean the same thing everywhere. We explain the differences in our refurbished vs. used vs. new guide, so we won't repeat them here.
